During May 2025, the EcoStories partnership brought together forty-four teachers, migrant-education specialists and citizen-science practitioners in Cyprus, Germany, Greece and Croatia. Each focus-group session had its own rhythm, yet a shared melody soon became audible: hands-on, place-anchored science makes students feel that schoolwork matters beyond the classroom walls.
A Cypriot teacher captured the spark perfectly when she described the moment her pupils stepped outdoors with thermometers: “When students measure temperature and explore their environment, it’s no longer theory, it becomes real science.” Across the five groups, educators linked that sense of doing to higher motivation, stronger peer bonds and crucially a boost in confidence for newly arrived migrant learners.
The curriculum squeeze everyone feels
Yet enthusiasm collided with a stubbornly packed timetable. Greek teachers, for instance, spoke candidly about curricula that still treat climate change as an afterthought and leave “almost no room” for exploratory projects. “Citizen Science can be applied,” one of them insisted, “but the framework is tight. It is also time…” Croatian colleagues echoed the dilemma, pointing out that teachers already juggle heavy administrative loads and often volunteer the extra hours that project-based learning demands.
What teachers asked for was practical support rather than abstract encouragement: ready-to-run lesson sequences mapped to national standards, flexible timetabling models such as project weeks, and visible recognition, credits, certificates, public showcases, that reward the extra effort.
Inclusion begins with language and empathy
In Aachen the discussion turned to language justice. Participants urged the project team to translate worksheets and consent forms not only into partner-country languages but also into students’ mother tongues. That step, they argued, eases cognitive load and signals genuine welcome; it also frees teachers from acting as ad-hoc translators during lessons.
Experts convened online by CIP (Cyprus) pushed the point deeper. Many migrant families, they reminded us, wrestle with trauma, precarious jobs and unfamiliar school cultures. One facilitator recounted how a parent–pupil bioblitz transformed family confidence because data collection relied on observation rather than perfect Greek or English. The group’s consensus was clear: empathy and culturally responsive practice have to precede, or at least travel alongside, scientific rigour.
Partnerships turn ideas into action
Teachers lit up whenever external allies entered the conversation. In Zagreb, stories of bird-monitoring walks and invasive-plant surveys run with the NGO Biom demonstrated how local experts supply both know-how and public legitimacy. Cypriot educators, meanwhile, imagined Environmental Education Centres like Salamiou or Cape Greco becoming “hubs for real educational action”, places where students can collect data one day and discuss policy impact the next.
How the focus groups have already changed EcoStories
The project team did not leave these insights on a flip-chart. Chapter 4 of the pedagogical e-book is being rewritten into a toolbox of workshop-ready scenarios, each with timing, materials and risk notes that teachers can photocopy at a glance. A parallel roadmap of micro-trainings, short webinars on trauma-informed practice, data ethics and local species identification, will launch in early autumn, complementing the longer summer schools requested by Greek and Croatian staff.
Finally, every pilot activity now ends with a “family challenge” so that learning spills beyond the school gate and strengthens community ties, an idea first seeded in the migrant-expert session when participants described the power of shared fieldwork to dissolve language barriers.

Over the summer EcoStories will test two cross-border “Mini-Missions” linking classrooms in Cyprus, Greece and Croatia through a shared climate-data dashboard.
